Trạng từ chỉ tần suất dùng để diễn tả mức độ thường xuyên xảy ra của một hành động, trả lời câu hỏi “How often?” (Bao lâu một lần?).

Các loại trạng từ chỉ tần suất

Trạng từ chỉ tần suất được chia thành hai loại chính:

Tần suất xác định (Definite Frequency):
- Diễn tả mức độ cụ thể, thường đi kèm với các cụm từ chỉ thời gian.
- Ví dụ: once a week, twice a month, every day.
Tần suất không xác định (Indefinite Frequency):
- Diễn tả mức độ chung chung, không cụ thể về thời gian.
- Ví dụ: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never.

Vị trí của trạng từ chỉ tần suất

Trước động từ thường:
- Ví dụ: She always studies hard.
Sau động từ “to be”:
- Ví dụ: He is often late.
Trước động từ chính và sau trợ động từ:
- Ví dụ:
  - She has never been to Paris.
  - You should always try your best.
Khi nhấn mạnh, trạng từ chỉ tần suất có thể đặt đầu hoặc cuối câu:
- Ví dụ:
  - Usually, I go to bed early.
  - I go to bed early sometimes.

Lưu ý khi sử dụng trạng từ chỉ tần suất

Phân biệt giữa “never” và “hardly ever”:
- Never có nghĩa là tuyệt đối không bao giờ.
  - Ví dụ: He never smokes.
- Hardly ever mang nghĩa rất hiếm, gần như không.
  - Ví dụ: She hardly ever drinks coffee.
Khi dùng với trợ động từ (do, does, have, will, etc.), trạng từ chỉ tần suất đứng giữa trợ động từ và động từ chính.
Rarely, seldom, hardly ever thường mang nghĩa phủ định, không dùng thêm “not” trong câu:
- Sai: ~~She doesn’t hardly ever go out~~.
- Đúng: She hardly ever goes out.
