Passage: Singapore or Singapura is a city as well as a country in South East Asia, a little red dot located just off the southern tip of Peninsular. Singapura is a Malay word. Singa means Lion and pura means City. That is why Singapore is also known as Lion City.
This Lion City was founded as a British Colony in 1819 and has developed into one of the world’s busiest ports today. You may find lots of modern skyscrapers everywhere mixed together with a taste of traditional Chinese, Indian and Malay influences in buildings. Combined with great food, fantastic shopping, exciting nightlife, first-class airport and connections to the rest of the world, this Lion City is a great stopover.
According to legend, Singapore was part of the Srivijayan Empire in the 13th century.
In 1819, Singapore was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and he declared Singapore a free port, with no duties charged on trade. This policy drew traders from far and wide and turned it into one of Asia’s busiest ports.
When World War II broke out, Singapore was seen as a formidable British base; with several naval defenses guarding against sea assault. However, to their surprise, the Japanese crossed Malaya by bicycle instead. Despite efforts to stop them, Singapore surrendered in 1942 after less than a week of fighting. The Japanese occupation lasted three years and eight months until the British returned in 1945.
Singapore joined Malaysia briefly in 1963 but became independent on 9 August 1965. Since then, Singapore’s economy has boomed and it became one of the four East Asian Tigers.

MARIE CURIE
Marie Curie was a Polish-French scientist who won two Nobel prizes. Her work focused on radioactivity.
Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland on November 7, 1867. Her parents were teachers who valued education. Girls did not go to school in those days, so Marie and her sister, Bronislawa, saved enough money to study in France. In 1891 Maria entered the Sorbonne, a university in Paris. Within three years, Marie completed degrees in physics and math. She began working with a French scientist, Pierre Curie. They got married in 1895.
In 1896 a French scientist named Henri Becquerel discovered the unusual rays of energy from uranium. Marie began studying it, and she named radioactivity. In 1898 the Curies announced their discovery of radium and polonium. In 1903 the Curies shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel.
After Pierre died in 1906, Marie carried on their research. She also became the first woman professor at the Sorbonne. In 1911 she won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Marie did not realize that working with radioactive material could make her ill. She died on July 4, 1934.
